I mean, Ren is cute in that adorable floppy-haired eighteen year old boy way (man that sounds so creepy coming from an adult woman, but you know what I mean), and Howard is this precious tall nerd man, and they both try so hard in their own way to make Lina adjust and feel comfortable in Italy. ![]() Love & Gelato is basically two love stories in one, and I think that's a really cool device, especially when it's done well, which it is here. I thought it was great that she had someone familiar, even if the stories were news, to comfort her through all the changes. Lina has to leave her life as she has always known it and move thousands of miles away. And I like that her journey parallels that of her mom, which we realize while reading her mom's journal. She felt very well-adjusted to me, but not in a fake or too-adult way. Even when she had hesitations, even when she and her friend were making plans to go back to the States, she still tried. Lina impressed me with her willingness to try things like going to a party with strangers, take a spontaneous trip to Rome, try newish foods, and just go to Italy in general. More than a mystery, this is a character study of a woman questioning every aspect – her marriage, her sexuality, her familial relationships, her career – of her life. The secondary characters are well-drawn and the subplots add to the story and to our understanding of Hazel. Hello, Transcriber is her debut novel, inspired by her work as a police transcriber. She grew up on a farm in a small northern town and now lives near Milwaukee with her husband and two pugs. While a reader may be morally troubled by the decisions she makes, I think the reader will still feel empathy towards her. HANNAH MORRISSEY earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Hazel is unhappy with a number of aspects of her life, feeling stuck and unfulfilled. Hazel finds herself wrapped up in the cases, and the detective’s whose voices she hears into the night, questioning the choices that have brought her to where she is today. But there is an opening on the overnight shift for a police transcriber and crime is not in short supply in this small city that is slowly sinking into the lake. Hazel needs a job while crafting her novel and in Black Harbor, Wisconsin, jobs are not easy to come by. Review by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian “ Hello, Transcriber ” by Hannah Morrissey ![]() ![]() But this book isn't defined by plot twists or great character developments. The story turns tragic as the trio splits up, Port falls gravely ill, and Kit becomes lost in the desert. They drift through a land of sweltering temperatures and dust storms and bedbugs and lice and biting flies. They insist this makes them "travelers", rather than "tourists". They don't have a plan and so drift from city to city seeing the sites and trying to overcome their boredom.
